New App "Discretion" Adds Privacy to Photo Sharing for iPhone and iPad.

Discretion 1.0 is an app for both iPhone and iPad, that provides extra privacy features for anyone who shares photos on social media. The privacy features include: masking faces, removing metadata, removing hidden layers, and anonymising the file name.

Discretion is available for Free on the App Store from May 30, 2023 for iPhone (iOS 15.0 and up) and iPad (iPadOS 15.0 and up). There is an in-app purchase named Complete Discretion that offers additional features for $1.99 as a Yearly Subscription or $4.99 as a One-Time Payment.

Discretion automatically adds masks over the faces in a photo. The masks can be either simple shapes, rectangular or circular, for a professional look. Or emoji masks, for a more fun, less formal look. Masks can be added, changed or removed. Nothing is fixed until you share the photo.

The app removes unnecessary metadata from the photo. The data that might otherwise provide all sorts of personal tracking information to your social media platform. For more detail, you can view the removed metadata in the special Privacy Report for each photo.

The Privacy Report also shows if there were any extra hidden layers in the image file (which the app removes) or if the file is a Live Photo with an added video (which the app also removes).

Filenames can be overlooked when considering photo sharing privacy. Discretion renames the photos with nondescript two digit names (like “01.jpeg”).

Discretion is free to download - and offers all the basic privacy features free of charge. An in-app purchase named “Complete Discretion” provides additional features such as batch processing (up to 6 images at a time) and access to over 1,840 emoji masks.

Discretion does not watermark photos in either the free or paid version.
